Life Expectancy
About This Indicator
What Is Life Expectancy?
How many years a baby born in a given year would live, on average, if that year's death rates held for its whole life: a snapshot, not a forecast. From the National Center for Health Statistics.
Why Does It Matter?
It sums up deaths at every age in one number, the broadest measure of a population's health, and weighs early deaths heavily. So the 57 years of 1929 did not mean most adults died in their fifties: about one baby in fifteen died before age one, pulling the average down.
Can Politics Influence It?
Slowly, at the margins: health coverage, public health, drug policy, and road and workplace safety all reach it. Medicine, income, and habits like smoking move it more, over decades.
Key Idea
Built from one year's death rates, it shows a bad year at once: it fell from 78.8 years in 2019 to 76.4 in 2021, with the pandemic and overdoses. It did not mean 2021's babies would live 76.4 years; a dip marks a year of unusual deaths, not a generation living shorter lives.
